Preventing Ice Dams this Winter
1/17/2018 (Permalink)
Don’t let ice dams cause water damage to your home. Ice dams are caused from the heat rising in the house and melting snow and ice on the roof. The melting snow and ice causes water runoff which freezes when it hits the cold edge of the roofline. The build up of ice on the edge of the room prevents water from draining properly. This trapped water can back up under shingles and find its way into your home, causing water damage.
Ice Dam Prevention Tips
- Add insulation in your attic
- Remove attic heat source
- Insulate attic access doors
- Check the exhausts
- Check flashing around chimney
- If possible get rid of snow on edge of your roof before it can turn to ice.
