How to clean up water damage in a home?
When a water emergency occurs in your home or business, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.
- Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
- Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
- Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
- Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is the typical cost for water damage restoration?
- The cost of a water loss will vary greatly depending on the severity of the situation.
What is water damage restoration?
- When water intrudes into a home or business, water damage restoration may be required. Water damage restoration is the professional process of removing unwanted water, drying and cleaning the structure and/or contents, and returning the property to its preloss condition. Happy New Year 2022 from SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties! A new beginning is upon us as we begin another year in a post-COVID world.
From our work family to your family, we wish you a very blessed 2022 with many celebrations and gifts to come!
In honor of the New Year, we'd like to share a few tips with you for keeping the inside of your house clean during the wintry months, thereby minimizing the potential for water damage.
TIPS FOR MINIMIZING INDOOR WATER DAMAGE
Your first line of defense for minimizing the pools of melted snow on your floors is to purchase and lay out a variety of water-trapping products, like doormats and shoe-racks. We recommend getting a thick mat that can absorb large amounts of water. Don't be afraid to replace these mats once they get worn out!!! Winter can be brutal sometimes...
Keep shoe racks as close as you can to the door so when you come in, you don't need to walk far. This minimizes trampling in snow, which leads to large, muddy puddles just collecting in pools.
Keep a heavy duty mop on hand for those times a puddle collects, just in case.
In the event that you require assistance with remediation of water damage, call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties for help (269)-273-8777. We are here 24/7, 365 days to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Water Damage Hazards in Edwardsburg, Michigan
6/20/2018 (Permalink)
Mixing water and electricity creates a potential for disaster, and since electrical hazards exists everywhere on the typical water damage job site, it is important to be aware of what to do. Water that comes into a home or building from either a roof leak or from water pipes in the attic is likely to intrude into the wiring system. Flooding can also pose a threat to your wiring system if the water reaches any ground level outlets.
The first thing to check is the power distribution box. Turning off all circuit breakers at the power distribution panel is the easiest way to protect you, your SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties crew, and the building occupants from electrical shock hazards. If only a portion of the building was affected, then turn off all circuits that provide power to the damaged areas if water has intruded into wall cavities and electrical outlets. Use either a lockout device or tag out device when circuits are turned off to prevent any shock hazards.
If you’re facing a water emergency, call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties at (269) 273-8777. We make water damage “Like it never even happened.”
Water Heater Maintenance for St. Joseph County, Michigan
6/5/2018 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties at (269) 273-8777 with any of your restoration needs!
Leaks within a home or business can cause extensive damage if unnoticed for a long period of time. Leaking water can seep into flooring, carpets, baseboard and walls while moving throughout the structure of the home. Such a leak not only damages your property, it can also interrupt your day-to-day schedule.
Since one out of every ten water incidents in a home is caused by a water heater, below are some tips and tricks to help provide some peace of mind:
- Before doing any maintenance on your water heater, shut off the power at the service panel
- Once every three months, drain one gallon of water from the tank. If you have hard water, do this every month to reduce sediment collecting in the bottom of the tank.
- Once every two years, have your water heater inspected by a service technician.
- Once every five years, have a service technician replace the anode rod.
If you didn’t get to these tips fast enough and have suffered from water damage, call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties at (269) 273-8777. We make water damage “Like it never even happened.”
Maintaining Your Sump Pump in Edwardsburg, Michigan
5/25/2018 (Permalink)
Keep your basement dry this spring with the proper maintenance!
The arrival of spring often signals lots of melting snow and heavy rainfall. If you have a damp basement or live in an area prone to flooding, you know that dealing with water damage can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. If your home has a wet basement, you’re not alone. The American Society of Home Inspectors estimates that more than 60 percent of homes have issues with water in the basement. A sump pump can be an effective option for preventing water damage.
Installed in a pit in the basement, these units sense when the water from rain or snow melt is rising in the pit and approaching the floor level. The incoming water is then pumped outside before it can damage the home or its furnishings. Sump pumps are relatively low-maintenance devices, but you can help keep your unit operational by inspecting it regularly. Steps in a regular maintenance program can include:
- Check the discharge line to make sure it is not stopped up or frozen. If necessary, unclog the air vent hole in the line.
- Check the inlet screen to ensure that it’s not clogged with any residue or debris.
- Making sure the float component is unobstructed and can move smoothly.
- Scan the pit and remove any visible debris, mud, or stones.
- Test the pump by slowly pouring a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise with the water level, triggering the unit to start pumping. If pumping doesn’t begin, check to see that the unit is plugged in. Your float switch or check valve may also be at fault.
- Go outside to see that water is discharging and flowing where it’s supposed to go – well away from your home.
If the water is still too much for your sump pump to handle, Call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties at (269) 273-8777. We make water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Preventing Ice Dams this Winter
1/17/2018 (Permalink)
Prevention is key when protecting your home against water damage.
Don’t let ice dams cause water damage to your home. Ice dams are caused from the heat rising in the house and melting snow and ice on the roof. The melting snow and ice causes water runoff which freezes when it hits the cold edge of the roofline. The build up of ice on the edge of the room prevents water from draining properly. This trapped water can back up under shingles and find its way into your home, causing water damage.
Ice Dam Prevention Tips
- Add insulation in your attic
- Remove attic heat source
- Insulate attic access doors
- Check the exhausts
- Check flashing around chimney
- If possible get rid of snow on edge of your roof before it can turn to ice.
If ice dams did cause havoc on your home this winter… your local SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties can help mitigate and get your structure back to preloss condition.

Sewage backups may not be covered by your insurance in Dowagiac, Michigan.
12/1/2017 (Permalink)
This sewage backup occurred in this customer's Dowagiac, Michigan bathroom after heavy rains fell.
Sewer or sewage backup insurance may be necessary to cover damages that occurred where no surface water flooding also occurred. Sewer backup insurance, coverage for damages caused by backup through sewer and drains, is available on most homeowners and commercial policies, usually as an additional rider. These backups not only cause damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards. Most homeowner and business insurance policies do not cover sewer or sewage backup unless specific sewer or sewage backup coverage is added to the policy, according to the Insurance Information Institute. On average a sewer or sewage backup cleanup claim process can cost anywhere from $2,000.00 to $20,000.00. SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties highly recommends discussing any and all insurance coverage questions with your insurance agent or insurance company.

Preventing Water Damage in your White Pigeon Home
7/6/2017 (Permalink)
If you do find water damage in your White Pigeon home, no worries! SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties are water damage restoration specialists.
Preventing Water Damage Tips:
- Repair peeling paint around doors and windows. Peeling paint can be a sign of water seeping into the wood.
- Check for roof leaks around chimneys, plumbing vents, and attic vents. Trace the source of a ceiling leak by measuring its position from the nearest outside wall and then locate this point in the attic using a measuring tape.
- Make sure your air conditioner’s drain pan drains easily, is adequately sloped toward the outlets, and that there is no standing water. Drain pans typically overflow the first time the unit is turned on.
- Keep an eye on your water bill. A jump in your water bill could mean you have a leak somewhere.

Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells
Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated areas of the home.
Consider shutting off outside faucets.
If you leave for multiple days at a time, always keep your thermostat above 60 degrees to keep outside walls from getting too cold.
