Fall Clean-Up: Fire Prevention

9/10/2024 (Permalink)

Fire with green text box Fall Fire Prevention

We are starting to see some cooler temps here in SW Michigan! With that comes thoughts of leaves, apples, and pumpkin spice! Something that might not be in our fall planning is fire prevention. Fall clean-up is crucial for fire prevention. Dry leaves, twigs, and debris can act as fuel, igniting quickly and spreading fires. By clearing these potential hazards, you're significantly reducing the risk of fire damage to your property. We have created a quick checklist to make sure you are ready for the fall!

  1. Roof and Gutters:
    • Remove debris: Clear leaves, sticks, our kid’s football, and other debris from your roof and gutters. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage, which can create a fire hazard.
    • Inspect for damage: Look for any damaged shingles or flashing. If your power is above ground, make sure that your lines are free from any obstructions.
  2. Yard and Garden:
    • Clear brush and debris: Remove dry grass, leaves, twigs, and any other flammable material from your yard.
    • Store firewood safely: Keep firewood away from your home and other structures. Store it in a metal shed or on a concrete pad.
  3. Chimney and Fireplace:
    • Have it cleaned: Hire a professional to clean your chimney and remove any creosote buildup, which can be a fire hazard.
    • Inspect for damage: Check for cracks or damage in the chimney or flue.
  4. Outdoor Grills and Fire Pits:
    • Clean and inspect: Clean your grill or fire pit after each use and inspect it for damage.
    • Store safely: Store propane tanks and other flammable materials away from your home and any heat sources.
  5. Emergency Preparedness:
    • Develop a fire escape plan: Create a plan for how you and your family will evacuate your home in case of a fire.
    • Install smoke detectors: Make sure you have working smoke detectors. We suggest one in every main living space as well as each bedroom.
    • Have a fire extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher readily available and know how to use it.

We are always here if you need us. 24/7, 365!

12/5/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO logo with logs on fire behind it Be careful with your extra heat this winter!

When you live in Michigan, you know how much winter can change our everyday lives. In an effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources like portable space heaters, fireplaces, and wood burning stoves. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is responsible for an estimated $893 million in property damage annually. Heating is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths, making it important to review ways to help reduce the risk of heating-related fire.

  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Always use the right kind of fuel specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly.
  • Set up an Emergency Ready Plan with SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties for your business.

THE HISTORY OF AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

We are aware of automatic sprinkler systems and their effectiveness for protecting life and property for over 100 years.

But, there are still some aspects about the operation and effectiveness of automatic fire sprinkler systems that warrant further education.

Source: American Fire Sprinkler Association

DID YOU REPLACE YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS?

SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph counties recommends using Smoke Detectors with Lithium Battery + Replacement Alert for your home and office.  The LED light will go off on the detector, reminding you to replace it.  There is no need to replace batteries with these systems, simply replace the smoke detectors as needed.

DID YOU KNOW WATER SPRINKLERS PRODUCE LESS DAMAGE THAN FIRE HOSES?

Water damage from a sprinkler system will be  less severe than the damage caused by water from the fire hydrants and hose lines.  Sprinkler systems release 8-24 gallons of water per minute while fire hoses release 80-125 gallons per minute.

In the event that you do sustain fire or water damage, SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph counties is ready to help!  Call us today for an assessment of your property damage.  We are always available at 269-273-8777.

Best Practices for Thanksgiving Cooking in your Kalamazoo, MI home

11/17/2021 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving Feast Table Thanksgiving Feast Table!

DID YOU KNOW?

Thanksgiving has the highest amount of kitchen fires followed by Christmas and Christmas Eve.  Below are some best practices to minimize the potential of a fire getting out of hand at your parties.

1.) Don't drink and fry

Are you familiar with the acronym B.L.E.V.E.? It stands for Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion.  Putting in a frozen or very wet bird can be detrimental to your well-being.  It may explode!  So, make sure to thoroughly thaw out your bird and dry it off before frying it up!

2.) Too many cooks in the kitchen

Sometimes Uncle Randy wants to help out and sometimes Auntie Sue wants to help out, too!  Thanksgiving is all about coming together with family and friends, but sometimes, there are just too many cooks in that kitchen. SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph counties suggests that you keep your kitchen staffed efficiently during the holidays.  Watch out for the little ones, too, and keep them away from the stove!

If an unfortunate event occurs, please know your SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even on Holidays. Contact us and we will make it "Like it never even happened." (269) 273-8777.

They form when ionized particles stick together forming chains. Attracted to cold air, soot webs generally form along the edges between the ceiling and wall. Fire Prevention Tips for Your Edwardsburg, MI Home

1/24/2019 (Permalink)

Fire prevention can help keep your home safe. In the event that fire does occur, call (269) 273-8777. We are always here to help!

Most of us do not view the dryer in our home as a danger. We regularly throw our wet clothes in it and go about our day without a second thought. We know to empty the lint trap regularly, but that is about as far as regular maintenance goes for most. There are a few areas of the dryer that should be cleaned regularly to prevent a household fire.

The compartment in which your lint trap sits can collect a buildup of lint. Cleaning the trap alone is not enough. It is recommended to use a flexible wire brush to clean the inside compartment. The rough bristles will pick up any trapped lint from deep within the compartment.

The dryer vent that leads outside is often forgotten as well. As just discussed, the lint trap does not catch everything. Lint and other debris can build up in your ventilation hoses. For this, we recommend using a dryer vent cleaning kit to rid the system of buildup. These kits often come with flexible extensions and a variety of brushes to get the hard to reach areas. Once clean, you may also be happy with how much better your dryer operates.

One 4 year old chef and Two Plastic Bowls in Centreville, MI: What Could Go Wrong?

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Even the smallest of kitchen fires leave behind smoke residue. Let us help make it, "Like it never even happened."

People say it all the time; they grow up way too fast. One day you’re bringing them home from the hospital. The next thing you know they are off to college. Somewhere in the middle of all that, you get to watch them discover doing things for themselves. After all, they can’t depend on mom and dad forever. This young four year old of Centreville, MI was no exception.

After watching his mother cook a multitude of family meals, he was confident he could handle one on his own. The young chef went to the refrigerator, removed a container of food, placed it on the hot stove, and continued watching television. His mother discovered her little chef’s masterpiece when she smelled smoke. The container was in flames, along with a towel that lay beside the burner. His mother quickly dowsed the fire in baking soda, removed the burnt items, and opened the windows.

Unfortunately, his mother spent 2 months spraying deodorizer to cover the smell until it went away. She should have called the professionals at SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties. They are trained and highly equipped to find sources of smoke odor and effectively eliminate these odors. Don’t let the stench of smoke residue take over your home; call us today at (269) 273-8777.

Soot and smoke infiltrated the door trim

The fire trucks may be gone but without proper immediate response, the real damage and the costs are just beginning. To return your residential or commercial property to its preloss condition requires professional restoration. This is not the job for a do-it-yourself property owner.

For results you can have confidence in, the IICRC recommends hiring a certified restoration firm. Restoration to a property can be complex. Proper smoke and odor removal are tasks that require technicians certified in these specific areas.

When selecting a certified restoration firm several factors must be considered:

  • Formal and up-to-date specialized training
  • Health and safety certifications
  • Experience in a wide range of restoration projects
  • Proof of proper insurance and licenses

No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather.  In an effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources such as fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is responsible for an estimated $893 million in property damage annually.  50% of these heating-related fires alone are reported during the months of December, January, and February.  Below are ways to help reduce the risk of a heating-related fire:

  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container.  Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.

Eliminate heating hazards this winter in Cass & St. Joseph Counties

1/17/2017 (Permalink)

50% of all residential heating-related fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.

No matter where you live, winter brings changes in the weather.

If your property does suffer fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties at (269-273-8777) to help make it "Like it never even happened."
